2028 Prep: Bawumia Pushes for Early Party Elections

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shared concerns about how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) handled its internal elections ahead of the 2024 general elections.

He explained that the party chose its presidential candidate later than the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which gave the NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, a head start. By the time the NPP had completed its internal process, President Mahama had already traveled across the country and connected with many voters, putting the NDC in a stronger position.

To avoid this mistake in the future, Dr. Bawumia revealed that the NPP is working on a new plan. This proposal suggests that all internal party elections—starting from the polling station level up to the presidential candidate—should be finished by January, at the latest, after each election year. This way, the party will have a full three years to get ready for the 2028 general elections.

He believes that giving the party enough time to campaign and prepare will put them in a better position to win. The goal is to make the NPP more organized and competitive by starting early and avoiding last-minute preparations in future elections.
