One dead, 9 rescued in an accident on Cale Coast-Takoradi Highway

A tragic road accident on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway has resulted in one confirmed death and several injuries. The collision occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 28, 2025, near the Elmina checkpoint and involved two vehicles: a Toyota Hiace (registration GR 1464-18) and a Zonda truck (registration GN 4197-21).

According to a report by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the University of Cape Coast Fire Station received a distress call at around 3:25 p.m. Firefighters, led by ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, responded swiftly. Upon arrival, the rescue team secured the scene, managed traffic flow, and requested backup from the Regional Headquarters Rescue Team due to the severity of the crash.

Nine individuals who were trapped in the wreckage were successfully rescued. Emergency medical personnel from the National Ambulance Service transported them to the University of Cape Coast Hospital for further care. The driver of the Toyota Hiace sustained only minor injuries. However, one passenger was found unresponsive at the scene and was later confirmed dead at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

Initial investigations by authorities indicate that the Toyota Hiace driver attempted an improper overtaking maneuver, which directly led to the collision. The minibus suffered extensive damage, while the Zonda truck was only partially damaged. Emergency teams have since cleared the site, and a full investigation is ongoing.
