Kennedy Agyapong Vows to Quit NPP if Bawumia Leads 2028 Elections

Kennedy Agyapong, a well-known politician and businessman from Ghana, says he will quit his political party thus the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes their presidential candidate for the 2028 elections. He made this strong statement during a radio interview on May 15, 2025.

Agyapong is unhappy with how things are going in the NPP. He believes Bawumia, who used to be the Vice President, hasn’t done a good job uniting the party. This disagreement comes after the NPP lost the 2024 election badly, they only got 38% of the votes. Many in the party are frustrated and trying to figure out how to move forward.

Back in 2023, Agyapong claimed someone offered him $8 million to drop out of the party’s internal race and support Bawumia instead. He said no, saying he doesn’t care about money , he cares about being honest with Ghanaians. He even mentioned a legal case where a court cut down a fine he had to pay from $18 million to just $500, possibly to show that he always stands his ground.

Agyapong also pointed to his $80 million steel factory in Tema, Ghana. He said it’s the only one like it in West Africa and gives jobs to hundreds of people every day. He believes this proves he can help grow Ghana’s economy if he becomes president.

Even though he wants to run again in 2028, polls show Bawumia is more popular within the NPP, with 57% support compared to Agyapong’s 22%. But some people inside and outside the party think Bawumia won’t be able to bring the NPP together, and the party might lose again if he’s chosen to lead.
