Ghanaians who rely on public transport may soon enjoy lower fares, thanks to recent improvements in the value of the Ghana cedi. According to a report by Citi FM on Monday, May 19, 2025, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that a fare reduction is on the way.
Speaking to Channel One News, the GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Mr. Abass Imoro, explained that the decision follows a series of discussions between the Transport Ministry and transport operators. Both sides initially had different suggestions on how much fares should be reduced, but they’ve now reached a compromise.
“It was a marathon meeting,” Mr. Imoro said. “We didn’t agree at first, but we met each other halfway.”
A final meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, to finalize the new fare structure. Mr. Imoro assured the public that the changes will benefit passengers, saying, “People should relax — we’re going to put smiles on their faces.”
The appreciation of the cedi has slightly reduced the prices of fuel and vehicle spare parts, making it possible to lower fares. This expected fare cut should ease the financial pressure on daily commuters, including workers, students, and traders.
The GPRTU has also pledged to promote fairness and transparency by ensuring that the updated fares are clearly displayed inside public transport vehicles.
As the cost of living remains high, this development comes as welcome relief for many Ghanaians who depend on commercial transport every day.
