MATTHEW OPOKU PREMPEH: Life and Career
Matthew Opoku Prempeh also known as NAPO is a Ghanaian Politician who currently serves as the Minister of Energy and a Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
LIFE AND EDUCATION
Matthew Opoku Prempeh was born in Ashanti New Town, Kumasi on May 23, 1968. However, he comes from Pakyi 2 in the Ashanti Region. He attended the KNUST Basic School in the Ashanti Region. He then went to Prempeh Senior High School for his Secondary Education. He later gained admission into the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology where he studied Medicine and Biology and completed his studies in 1994. Opoku Prempeh moved to the Netherlands where he furthered his studies by pursuing an MSc. Clinical Epidemiology. Due to his political ambitions he also endeavored to study Leadership and Governance in Havard University. Dr. Prempeh pursued another postgraduate degree, this time, in the field of Surgery in 2002.
CAREER AND POLITICS
Dr. Opoku Prempeh began a career in medicine and serves as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in the UK from 1999 to 2003. He also served as CEO of Keyedemap Security Services Limited from 2004 to 2009 after which he entered parliament
Member of Parliament
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was first elected as Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region during the 2008 general elections in which he represented his party, the New Patriotic Party and has since been in office. As MP, he has been a member of the health committee and the appointments’ committee.
Minister of Education
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was appointed as the Minister of Education in 2017 under the Akufo-Addo led administration. He was also listed as one of the 19 cabinet ministers as part of the circle of the President.
Under his leadership as the Minister of Education, the Free SHS programme which was the flagship policy of the NPP government was introduced. Other programmes including the promotion and reformation of the Technical and Vocational Education (TVET).
Minister of Energy
In a ministerial reshuffle during the second term of Akufo-Addo’s Presidency (2021), he was appointed as the Minister of Energy.
Personal Life
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is a Christian. He is the nephew of the former President, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been divorced.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has been awarded for his feats in education and politics. He has received the Havard Ministerial Medal of Achievement awards in 2020. He is also a recipient of two Honorary Doctorate Awards from the University of Education,
