Judicial Secretary Cyracus Bapuuroh Sends Afenyo-Markin Home After Accepting His Petition.

On Monday, May 5, 2025, something important happened in Ghana. A group of people led by a political party called the New Patriotic Party (or NPP for short) held a big protest called the “Save the Judiciary Demo.” They were not happy because the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, had suspended the Chief Justice of the country, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The Chief Justice is the top judge in Ghana, and the NPP didn’t agree with the decision to send her away from work.

Early in the morning, around 7:00 a.m., the protest began at a park near the Supreme Court (this is the biggest court in Ghana). People from other political parties also joined the protest. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allied parties such as the Liberal Party of Ghana, the National Democratic Party, the People’s National Party, and the Ghana Union Movement.

But there was a big problem at the start. When the protesters got to the Supreme Court, they found the main gate locked!. This made it hard for them to give their petition (a letter asking for something important) to the court.

After some talking and negotiating with the police, part of the gate was opened, and a few leaders were allowed in. Some of these leaders included Alexander Afenyo-Markin (the Minority Leader in Parliament), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (former Education Minister), and Stephen Amoah (a Member of Parliament).

Inside, they gave their petition to the Acting Judicial Secretary, Cyracus Bapuuroh. He said he would send the petition to the right people. Then, the group went to Parliament and the Jubilee House to deliver more copies of their petition.

Even though the NPP had said many people would join the protest, only a few hundred came, not the thousands they had promised. Still, the protest stayed peaceful, and the leaders hoped their message would be heard.

In regard to the Petition being presented before the Supreme Court,Parliament and Jubilee House . Ghanaians especially New Patriotic Party (NPP) members are expecting a positive feedback from all the authorities mentioned.
