Afenyo Markin Leads Minority MPs to EOCO over Wontumi’s detention

Afenyo Markin Leads Minority MPs to EOCO over Wontumi’s detention

In a rare show of unity, Minority Members of Parliament are marching to the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to show support for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

The MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, say this is more than just an act of sympathy. They view it as a stand against what they believe is the unfair and harsh treatment of Wontumi, who has been held in EOCO custody since May 27.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, May 29, Afenyo-Markin urged EOCO to conduct its investigations lawfully and fairly.
“Do your job, but do it within the law,” he stated. “Others who have been investigated were treated with dignity and allowed due process. But if we continue down this path, it could have serious consequences in the future.”

Wontumi is being investigated over alleged financial misconduct involving EXIMBANK. His detention has raised eyebrows, especially because of the GHS50 million bail requirement and the need for two sureties—conditions the Minority calls excessive and unrealistic.

“We don’t own properties worth GHS50 million. Where do they expect him to find that kind of money?” Afenyo-Markin asked. He added that the Minority will continue their protest, even boycotting Parliament if necessary.

“Until EOCO acts fairly, we, no matter how small our numbers, we will stand by him. We’ll stay with him, even sleep there. We’re not going to use any property as bail.”

He also called for support from the entire Parliament, urging MPs from both sides to stand together and demand accountability from EOCO.
“I hope all my colleagues will join so EOCO sees that Parliament stands united on this issue,” he said.
