22,770 BECE scripts under investigation by WAEC for suspected malpractices.

Following the release of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results on Thursday, November 9, 2023, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) have withheld and are scrutinizing the scripts of over 22, 770 candidates.

According to a Statement from WAEC, these scripts are being investigated for what the council describes as “mass cheating” by the respective candidates. The statement further added that the results of these candidates may either be cancelled or released depending on the findings on investigations.

“…the scripts of 22,770 candidates, in certain subjects are being scrutinized for reported cases of mass cheating. Their results may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.” the statement read.

The statement further added that subject results of about 312 school candidates and 3 private candidates have been cancelled due to their engagement in examination malpractices including the possession of foreign materials such as prepared notes, text books, and printed materials in the examination hall. The entire results of about 41 school candidates and 1 private candidate have been cancelled for bringing along their mobile phones into the examination hall.

Also, the council have also withheld the subject results of 180 school students and 4 private candidates for suspected offence. Whereas the entire results of 110 school candidates and 2 private candidates have been withheld pending release.

With first year students in Ghanaian Senior High Schools set to report to school in the first week, affected students would have to wait for conclusion of the investigations to know their fate.
